Twitter rolls out new profile pages

By Stefano on 24 April 2014

At the start of April Twitter revealed a totally redesigned Twitter profile so that you can ‘show the world who you are’.

How do the new profiles work?

Initially, only new users and a handful of celebrities such as Zac Efron, Kerry Washington and Michelle Obama had new Twitter profiles. But as of this week, anyone can switch to the new layout.

The new layout gives users larger profile photos, larger headers images and several other new features:

  • Best tweets: your most engaging tweet will be appear larger than other tweets;
  • pinned tweets: tweets can be pinned to the top of the page;
  • filtered tweets: when viewing a profile, tweets can now be filtered by ‘Tweets’, ‘Tweets with photos/videos’ and ‘Tweets and replies’.
To get the best out of the new profile pages, Twitter recommends 400x400 pixels for profile photos and 1500x500 for header photos.

What will be the impact of the new layout?

Apart from making Twitter profiles more visual than before, Twitter has made important improvements to how your Twitter feed looks. The Twitter feed remains as ‘the digital stream of your online consciousness’ and Twitter is leveraging this by making your most engaging tweets stand out. In addition, the ability to pin tweets complements your user bio – as FastCode puts it “while the [bio] tells people information about you, the pinned tweet is a snapshot of what you’re all about now

Previously, Twitter profiles had little room for customisation. With the new layout, Twitter allows users to personalise their profiles and leverage their best tweets, making them stand out more than before.

What do we think?

The new Twitter profile is a clean and refreshing update that’ll make both brand and user profiles more unique and interesting to visit. The new ‘Pinned Tweets’ feature and larger imagery will allow brands to do more on their profile pages, especially when running promotions and campaigns.
